Squash Set to Shine Again at Lima 2027 Pan American Games

Squash has officially secured its place in the Sports Program for the XX Pan American Games Lima 2027, ensuring the fast-paced racket sport will continue its unbroken presence at the continental multi-sport event since 1995. The announcement was made by Panam Sports, confirming squash as one of 36 disciplines set to captivate audiences and athletes from July 16 to August 1, 2027, in the Peruvian capital.

The inclusion of squash in Lima 2027 marks another significant chapter for the sport in the Americas. The United States has historically dominated the squash events at the Pan American Games, boasting an impressive 14 gold medals since its debut in Mar del Plata in 1995.

The last edition, Santiago 2023, saw thrilling competitions and a distribution of gold medals. Peru’s own Diego Elias, a groundbreaking figure in squash as the first South American to reach World No. 1, claimed gold in the individual men’s championship. Olivia Weaver of the USA secured the women’s individual gold. Colombia demonstrated its growing prowess, taking home three gold medals in the men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and men’s team competitions, while the USA triumphed in the women’s team event.

The 2027 Games will welcome over 7,000 athletes from 41 countries across the American continents. For local hero Diego Elias, Lima 2027 presents a unique and exciting opportunity to defend his title on home soil, undoubtedly igniting the passion of Peruvian squash fans.

Neven Ilic, President of Panam Sports, emphasized the collaborative process behind the sport selections. “As Panam Sports we have taken a very important step with the approval of the 36 sports for Lima 2027. We followed a very democratic process among all the National Olympic Committees and today, the Executive Board has confirmed the sports of the Program of our Pan American Games,” he stated.

Sergio Becerra, President of the Federacion Panamericana de Squash (PanAm Squash), expressed immense enthusiasm for the announcement. “We are thrilled and deeply honored to see squash officially included once again in the Pan American Games for Lima 2027,” said Becerra. “This is a tremendous milestone for our sport and a testament to the hard work of our athletes, coaches, and national federations across the Americas. The Pan Am Games are a crucial platform for showcasing the extraordinary talent and passion within the squash community, and Lima 2027 promises to be an inspiring chapter in our sport’s growth.
