Malaysian badminton ace Ong Yew Sin and former Japanese star Aya Ohori have officially exchanged vows, entering a new chapter of their lives together in an intimate civil ceremony held at the National Registration Department (JPN) in Melaka on Thursday.

The union of the two prominent figures from the international badminton scene was witnessed by close family members, formalizing a cross-cultural romance that has captivated fans across Asia and beyond. Assistant Registrar Nur Fatehah Razali officiated the ceremony.

Both Yew Sin, 30, and Ohori, 28, shared their joy on social media, with Ohori posting a heartwarming photo and writing, “Officially off the market. May we grow old together and love each other more and more every day. Thanks, everyone, for the wishes and support.”

Their wedding comes three months after the couple announced their engagement in March, a moment Yew Sin marked with a post stating, “Our forever starts today.” He had previously spoken about their journey, acknowledging, “Different nationalities, different cultures and different living styles. We’ve learned to adapt and accept each other’s lifestyles, and understand each other’s cultures throughout the years (we still quarrel always).”

Ong Yew Sin is a renowned men’s doubles shuttler, currently ranked 31st in the world with his partner Teo Ee Yi. He is best known for clinching a bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships.

Aya Ohori, a formidable women’s singles player, announced her retirement from professional badminton earlier this year after a strong final season that saw her win the Thailand Masters and Australian Open in 2024. She also secured a bronze medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and played a crucial role in Japan’s runner-up finish at the 2020 Uber Cup.

Their love story, which transcends national borders and disciplines within the sport, has been a rare and enduring tale in the high-pressure world of elite badminton. As they embark on this new journey, the badminton community and fans worldwide extend their warmest congratulations to the newlyweds.
